Do You Have Style?

I started to write this blog many years ago, but aborted the mission, I wasn’t sure my readers were ready for my thoughts on the subject as a Chicago Interior Designer. To calm my nerves, I wrote this Instagram post to make up for not writing the blog:

So I ask, do you have style? I know, that’s a hard question to answer. Taste is subjective. Case in point, that wedding in Venice, summer 2025. Let’s not even begin to discuss that display of poor taste and spending like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Full disclosure: this is not a mandate for anyone in particular. I’m not asking you to change yourself, unless you want to. What I’m referring to is how people can actually live if they choose to. Life can get in the way, perhaps you’ve denied yourself. Maybe now is the perfect time to enjoy a well deserved design update or upgrade to your environment.

We live differently today and that’s a good thing! We can express our style in many ways. I think it’s wonderful to be unique. Wouldn’t it be boring if we were all the same?

I think it’s fun to look to the past when creating something for the present. I was going through some of my archival photos and came across some very chic spaces for the style cognoscenti. Here are two of my favorites in no particular order.

Oscar de la Renta

The late and most stylish fashion designer, Oscar de la Renta was a true tastemaker.

As you can see, Mr. de la Renta had great style! He was also an avid gardener and loved to work side-by-side with his gardeners. His taste tended to be more traditional and classical. The clothing he designed made a woman look beautiful, refined and most elegant.

Giorgio Armani

It is likely you know of the late, great Giorgio Armani, the king of restraint and minimalism. Mr. Armani changed how men and women dressed forever. His style has influenced many designers and continues to do so. His many homes around the world had an elegant, minimal aesthetic.

Rather than sharing photos from any of his residences, I’ve decided to share his immense yacht with you. And, of course, the yacht is black, talk about the peak of chic!

Even if you’re aware of these people or their lifestyles, it’s important to know about the past. This applies to many subjects, not just design. Of course this is the here and now, we are living in the present after all.

Anything is possible if you want it badly enough! Perhaps you’ll want to incorporate a new stylish perspective into your life.

What Makes a Good Chicago Interior Designer?

A good Chicago interior designer brings together creativity, practicality, and a deep understanding of the city’s distinctive architectural heritage. Chicago is known for its iconic skyline, historic greystones, industrial lofts, and diverse neighborhoods, and the best designers know how to draw inspiration from these influences while tailoring spaces to the unique needs of their clients.

Chicago and Lake MichiganFirst, strong spatial awareness and an ability to balance form with function are essential. Chicago homes often present design challenges—open-plan lofts in the West Loop, narrow vintage apartments in Lakeview, or classic bungalows on the South Side. A skilled designer understands how to maximize natural light, improve flow, and create a comfortable, cohesive environment no matter the layout.

Second, an understanding of materials and craftsmanship is crucial. Chicago has a rich tradition of fine woodworking, metalwork, and bespoke furniture. A great designer knows how to combine high-quality materials with practical durability, especially considering the city’s seasonal extremes. They choose furnishings and finishes that not only look beautiful but also withstand daily wear.

Third, communication and collaboration set exceptional designers apart. They listen closely to their clients’ lifestyles, tastes, and goals, translating abstract ideas into tangible plans. They also manage contractors, timelines, and budgets with professionalism and transparency. Because Chicago’s renovation regulations can vary by neighborhood and building type, familiarity with local codes and processes is also a major advantage.

Finally, a good Chicago interior designer has a strong sense of style without imposing it. Whether modern, industrial, classic, or eclectic, they craft spaces that feel personal, welcoming, and authentically connected to the city’s character.
